Process

Looking to create a level that would fit into the world of Fallout, so I began by refamiliarizing myself with the world of Fallout 4. From their I set to developing a basic story for this location, where is it, who lives or lived there, and what happened there.

With that in mind I developed the story of a group of rich big game hunters that survive the nuclear war in their private vault and emerged to find a strange new world full of strange new creatures they could hunt. They began to hunt everything in sight, and mounting "trophies" in their vault, including super mutants who became agree and slaughtered them in revenge. Now the super mutants have occupied vault, building their camp within.

I then began construction, familiarizing myself with the available assets and studying the already existing levels for reference as to architecture and decorative styles. From there I began construction of the basic layout.

With the layout in place I moved to placing decorative objects, loot, decals, and enemies. I took into account smaller environmental story telling, such as the manner in which super mutants set up the stuffed Death Claw display like a shrine, how bedding was set up with tent tarps for a modicum of privacy, and how sections of ceiling and walls have collapsed in with dirt from the super mutants tunneling in and the sub standard building materials used by the Colonel to build his vault.

Next was lighting. Seeing as the Super Mutants would have invaded the vault violently, they probably would damaged electrical systems and lighting when they broke in, so I lit the level rather dark. lighting is provided by the few light fixtures still functioning and the fire barrels the super mutants brought in.

My final step was installing terminals full of lore. The two terminals one in the front security office and one in the Colonel's office at the end tell the story of how the vault fell, one from the point of view straight laced and professional chief of security and the other through the eyes of the foolish Colonel Langston.

Terminal Logs

A major part of games like Fallout is story telling and the lore of the world. While environmental story telling can a good story, it can only go so far. Its easy to tell from the environment that its a vault, it had high society occupants and that it's been taken over by super mutants. However, why did they take over and what happened to the old inhabitants is a mystery.

Things like terminals are excellent tools to help tell the story of the original inhabitants of the vault. In this vault I chose to tell the story from two points of view, from the professional head of security and the eccentric Colonel Langston.

See file to left for full copies of the terminal logs.
